Padel is growing at an extraordinary pace. Across the world, new courts are appearing, clubs are opening and more people are discovering a sport that is social, accessible and genuinely fun. But if Padel is to fulfil its potential, it needs to become more than a fast-growing sport. It needs to become a community sport that is available, affordable and welcoming in every community.
What makes Padel different is its ability to bring people together. You do not need to be an elite athlete, have years of sporting experience or arrive with a ready-made group of friends. Four people can step onto a court, pick up a racket and enjoy a game together.
That simple social experience is one of Padel’s greatest strengths.
Community Padel can also help tackle some of the challenges facing society today. We are living increasingly busy and connected lives, yet many people experience loneliness and a lack of meaningful social interaction. A local Padel court can become a meeting point and can be somewhere people exercise, make friends, compete, laugh and belong.
The sport also has enormous potential to engage people who may not traditionally see themselves as “sporty”. Padel is relatively easy to pick up, and its doubles format means players can support and encourage each other. Children, parents, older adults, beginners and experienced players can all share the same space.
That is why accessibility matters. If Padel courts are concentrated only in premium private clubs or affluent areas, the sport risks becoming something people aspire to rather than something everyone can participate in.
